Independent Contractor Health Insurance in Florida: Your 2027 Options

Freelancers working on laptops around a shared table

Florida has more people on Marketplace health plans than any other state, about 4.5 million in 2026. A lot of them are contractors, realtors, rideshare drivers, tradespeople, and freelancers who buy their own coverage. If you're one of them, here's what your options look like for 2027.

Your main options

  • A Marketplace plan through HealthCare.gov, since Florida uses the federal Marketplace
  • A private health plan, priced on your age and health instead of your income
  • Your spouse's employer plan, if they have one
  • A small group plan, if your business has at least one employee who isn't you or your spouse

Key 2027 dates in Florida

Open enrollment runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. Sign up by December 15 if you want coverage to start January 1. If you sign up between December 16 and January 15, coverage starts February 1.

After January 15, you need a qualifying life event, like losing other coverage or moving, to get a Marketplace plan. Many private plans can start on the first of any month, so they're an option if you miss the deadline.

How your income is counted

Your Marketplace tax credit is based on your net self-employment income, meaning what's left after business expenses. For 2027 coverage, tax credits generally stop at about $63,840 for a single person and $132,000 for a family of four.

Florida hasn't expanded Medicaid. That matters if you have a slow year: adults with very low income may not qualify for Medicaid or for a Marketplace tax credit. If your income dropped, it's worth getting your options checked before you assume you're covered.

What coverage costs in Florida

In 2026, the average benchmark silver plan for a 40-year-old in Florida was about $683 a month before tax credits, higher than the national average of about $625. Insurers proposed further increases for 2027, so expect your renewal to look different this year.

Check the network

Many Florida Marketplace plans are HMOs or EPOs, which only cover doctors in their network. If you have a doctor you want to keep, check that they're in network before you pick a plan, not after.
