2027 open enrollment guide

Open enrollment for 2027: dates, deadlines, and your options.

Open enrollment for 2027 Marketplace coverage starts November 1, 2026. Here's what to know, and why it pays to compare before your plan renews automatically.

Jan 15, 2027Open enrollment ends in most states (coverage starts February 1)

Key dates

These dates apply to HealthCare.gov, which most of my states use. A few states run their own enrollment websites and can set their own deadlines. Among the states where I'm licensed, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Nevada, and Virginia run their own marketplaces, so check your state's site or ask me.

Miss the deadline and you generally can't buy a Marketplace plan until next year unless you have a qualifying life event, like losing other coverage, moving, getting married, or having a baby.

Don't let your plan renew on autopilot

If you do nothing, your current Marketplace plan often renews automatically. But premiums, networks, and drug lists change every year, and your plan may not even be offered in 2027. Spend a few minutes comparing before December 15.

If you don't get a subsidy, look beyond the Marketplace

The temporary rules that expanded Marketplace tax credits ended after 2025. Under current law, households earning more than 400% of the federal poverty level (about $63,840 for one person or $132,000 for a family of four for 2027 coverage) generally get no tax credit and pay full price.

If that's you, private plans are worth comparing. They're priced on health instead of income, and many can start any month of the year, not just during open enrollment. Here's how they compare.

Your open enrollment checklist

  • Estimate your 2027 household income
  • List your doctors, hospitals, and prescriptions
  • Check whether your current plan is changing or ending
  • Compare Marketplace and private prices for your household
  • Enroll by December 15 for January 1 coverage
