Missed Open Enrollment? Your Health Insurance Options After January 15
Open enrollment for 2027 Marketplace coverage runs from November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027 in most states. Enroll by December 15 if you want coverage to start January 1.
But life doesn't always line up with a deadline. If you miss it, you aren't necessarily stuck without coverage until next year.
Special enrollment periods
You can still buy a Marketplace plan outside open enrollment if you have a qualifying life event. Common ones include:
- Losing other health coverage, like a job-based plan or Medicaid
- Moving to a new area
- Getting married
- Having or adopting a baby
In most cases you have 60 days from the event to enroll, so don't wait.
Private health insurance
Many private health plans aren't tied to open enrollment. They can often start on the first of any month, which makes them a common option for people who missed the deadline or are between jobs.
Private plans may use medical underwriting, so your health history can affect whether you qualify and what's covered. It's worth reviewing the details before you apply.
Medicaid and CHIP
Medicaid and CHIP accept applications year-round. If your income has dropped, check whether you or your kids qualify.
